It was named for a member of the Mercer family, a prominent Seattle pioneer family, and was a recreational and hunting site for early European American settlers in the area.
The first permanent European American settlers arrived in 1885 and were followed by the establishment of East Seattle on the northwest side of Mercer Island in 1887.
East Seattle later developed into a resort town with regular steamboat ferries from Seattle and the Eastside.
