The Jupiter area has been inhabited for thousands of years, first by Indigenous peoples, such as the Jaega, whose village was located near the inlet.
Spanish explorers recorded the area during the 16th century, and the name "Jupiter" originated from a mistranslation of the Spanish name Jobe, derived from the Indigenous name Hobe, which was further misunderstood by mapmakers to refer to the Roman god.
Permanent American settlement began in the 19th with the construction of the Jupiter Inlet Light in 1860, which became an important maritime landmark along Florida's east coast.
